  • A. 16-17 Condemnation of daughters of Zion's haughtiness and pride - 16 The LORD also says: "Because the daughters of Zion are haughty—walking with heads held high and wanton eyes, prancing and skipping as they go, jingling the bracelets on their ankles— 17 the Lord will bring sores on the heads of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will make their foreheads bare."
  • B. 18-23 Removal of ornamental garments and jewelry - 18 In that day the Lord will take away their finery: their anklets and headbands and crescents; 19 their pendants, bracelets, and veils; 20 their headdresses, ankle chains, and sashes; their perfume bottles and charms; 21 their signet rings and nose rings; 22 their festive robes, capes, cloaks, and purses; 23 and their mirrors, linen garments, tiaras, and shawls.
  • C. 24 Reversal — "instead of" statements, beauty to degradation - 24 Instead of fragrance there will be a stench; instead of a belt, a rope; instead of styled hair, baldness; instead of fine clothing, sackcloth; instead of beauty, shame.
  • B'. 4:2 True spiritual beauty restored through the branch of the LORD - 2 On that day the Branch of the LORD will be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land will be the pride and glory of Israel's survivors.
  • A'. 4:3-6 Daughters of Zion cleansed; Jerusalem sanctified - 3 Whoever remains in Zion and whoever is left in Jerusalem will be called holy—all in Jerusalem who are recorded among the living— 4 when the Lord has washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion and cleansed the bloodstains from the heart of Jerusalem by a spirit of judgment and a spirit of fire. 5 Then the LORD will create over all of Mount Zion and over her assemblies a cloud of smoke by day and a glowing flame of fire by night. For over all the glory there will be a canopy, 6 a shelter to give shade from the heat by day, and a refuge and hiding place from the storm and the rain.
