Primary Chiasm (vv. 22–32)
- A. 22 — The virgin, the daughter of Zion, despises and mocks Sennacherib; the daughter of Jerusalem shakes her head at him.
- B. 23–25 — Sennacherib's boast: ascended the heights of the mountains, cut down Lebanon's cedars, dug wells and drunk foreign waters, dried up Egypt's rivers with his feet.
- C. 26–27 — "Have you not heard? Long ago I ordained it; I planned it; now I have brought it to pass — that you should crush fortified cities."
- C'. 28–29 — "But I know your sitting down and raging against Me — therefore I will put My hook in your nose and I will turn you back the way you came."
- B'. 30–31 — Sign to Hezekiah: spontaneous harvests in years one and two; sow and reap in year three — the remnant will take root and bear fruit.
- A'. 32 — From Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, survivors from mount Zion: the zeal of the LORD of Hosts will accomplish this.
Secondary Chiasm (vv. 33–38)
- 2A. 33–34 — The LORD: the king of Assyria shall not enter this city or shoot an arrow here; by the way he came, he shall return.
- 2B. 35 — "I will defend this city and save it for My own sake and for the sake of My servant David."
- 2B'. 36 — The angel of the LORD went forth and struck down 185,000 Assyrians; when morning came, all were dead.
- 2A'. 37–38 — Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and returned to Nineveh; his sons killed him there and Esarhaddon reigned in his place.
