- A. 14–15 A man going on a journey entrusts his goods to his servants — each according to his ability — then departs.
- B. 16 The servant given five talents goes at once and trades with them, gaining five more.
- C. 17 The servant given two talents likewise gains two more.
- D. 18 But the servant given one talent digs a hole and hides his master's money in the ground.
- A'. 19 After a long time the master returns and settles accounts with his servants.
- B'. 20–21 The servant who received five talents presents five more. His master replies: "Well done, good and faithful servant — enter into the joy of your master."
- C'. 22–23 The servant who received two talents presents two more. His master replies: "Well done, good and faithful servant — enter into the joy of your master."
- D'. 24–30 The servant who received one talent returns it untouched, pleading fear of a hard master. His master condemns him: "You wicked and lazy servant — cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."
