  • A. 17 As Jesus started on His way, a man ran up and knelt before Him. "Good Teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
  • B. 18 "Why do you call Me good?" Jesus replied. "No one is good except God alone.
  • C. 19 You know the commandments: 'Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not bear false witness, do not cheat others, honor your father and mother.'"
  • B'. 20 "Teacher," he replied, "all these I have kept from my youth."
  • A'. 21-22 Jesus looked at him, loved him, and said to him, "There is one thing you lack: Go, sell everything you own and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me." But the man was saddened by these words and went away in sorrow, because he had great wealth.

  • 2A. 23 And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!
  • 2B. 24a And the disciples were astonished at his words.
  • 2C. 24b But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!
  • 2D. 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

  • 3B'. 30 will fail to receive a hundredfold in the present age—houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and fields, along with persecutions—and in the age to come, eternal life.
  • 3A'. 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first."
