Revelation 21:3

Greek Key Terms:

  • σκηνή (skēnē) - tent, tabernacle, dwelling place
  • μετά (meta) - with (+ genitive: "in company with, among")
  • ἀνθρώπων (anthrōpōn) - men, humans, mankind
  • σκηνόω (skēnoō) - to dwell, tabernacle, pitch tent
  • λαός (laos) - people (singular: "His people" as a collective)
  • αὐτοῖς (autois) - with them
  • αὐτὸς (autos) - He Himself

Context: Revelation 21:1-8 describes the new heaven and new earth, the New Jerusalem descending from heaven, and the consummation of God's redemptive plan. After the judgment of Satan, death, and Hades (Revelation 20:7-15), John sees "a new heaven and a new earth" (21:1) and "the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband" (21:2). Verse 3 is the climactic announcement: a loud voice from the throne proclaims that God's dwelling is now with humanity, God will dwell with them, they will be His people, and God Himself will be with them as their God. Verses 4-5 describe the removal of all suffering and the renewal of all things.

Connection Method(s): Typology (Direct, Forward-Looking), Promise-Fulfillment — God dwelling directly with humanity consummates the cherubim trajectory (the disappearance of cherubim proves their typological nature as Fairbairn argues) and fulfills the covenant formula promises repeated throughout Scripture (Exod 29:45; Lev 26:12; Jer 31:33; Ezek 37:27).

Christological Connection: Revelation 21:3 fulfills the Cherubim typology and God's eternal purpose:

  1. From Cherubim Guarding to God Dwelling Directly: Genesis 3:24 shows cherubim barring humanity from God's presence after sin. Throughout the OT, cherubim marked the boundary between humanity and God (on ark, on veil, throughout temple). Access was restricted. Revelation 21:3 announces the complete removal of every barrier: "The dwelling of God is with man. He will dwell with them." No cherubim guard the way; no veil separates; no mediation required. God dwells directly with His people. This is the ultimate escalation from Genesis 3:24.
  1. Cherubim Disappear = Typology Fulfilled: Cherubim are prominent in Revelation 4-5 (four living creatures around the throne, ceaselessly worshiping). They are absent in Revelation 21-22. Fairbairn argues this proves their typological nature: cherubim represented ideal glorified creaturehood dwelling in God's presence. When actual glorified humanity arrives to dwell with God (Revelation 21:3), the symbolic representation (cherubim) is no longer needed. The type gives way to the reality.
  1. Tabernacle Imagery Fulfilled: The term σκηνή (skēnē, "tent, tabernacle, dwelling") echoes the OT tabernacle (σκηνή in LXX for מִשְׁכָּן, miškān). God commanded, "Let them make me a sanctuary [tabernacle], that I may dwell in their midst" (Exodus 25:8). The tabernacle was temporary, portable, and restrictive (cherubim on veil). Revelation 21:3 announces the eternal, universal, unrestricted tabernacle: God Himself dwelling directly with humanity. Christ is the link: He "tabernacled" among us (John 1:14, ἐσκήνωσεν), and now God eternally tabernacles with His people.
  1. From Temple with Cherubim to No Temple Needed: Revelation 21:22 declares, "I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb." The temple with cherubim was a provisional means of God dwelling among His people. In the new creation, no temple is needed—God and the Lamb are present directly. The cherubim that once framed God's throne (Exodus 25:18-22) and guarded God's holiness are absent because their function is fulfilled: redeemed humanity now dwells with God in holiness, seeing His face (Revelation 22:4).
  1. Covenant Formula Perfectly Fulfilled: "They will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God" (21:3). This covenant formula, repeated throughout the OT (Exodus 6:7; Leviticus 26:12; Jeremiah 31:33; Ezekiel 37:27), reaches ultimate, unbreakable fulfillment. No longer "I will dwell among you" (Leviticus 26:11) with restrictions and cherubim barriers, but "He will dwell with them" (Revelation 21:3) directly, eternally, unmediated.
  1. The Complete Trajectory:
    • Genesis 3:8, 24: God walked with Adam in Eden; after sin, cherubim bar the way back
    • Exodus 25-40: Tabernacle built; cherubim on ark and veil; God dwells among Israel but access restricted
    • 1 Kings 6-8: Temple built; cherubim throughout; glory fills it; access still restricted
    • Ezekiel 10-11: Glory departs with cherubim; judgment on sin
    • John 1:14: Christ tabernacles among humanity; God with us
    • 1 Corinthians 3:16: Church is God's temple; Spirit indwells
    • Revelation 21:3: God dwells directly with humanity; cherubim absent; barriers removed; covenant fulfilled

Quote (Fairbairn): "The absence of cherubim in the new creation is the most eloquent testimony to their typological significance. They represented the ideal of glorified creation in God's presence. When the reality arrives—redeemed humanity dwelling eternally with God—the symbols are no longer needed."

Quote (Beale): "Revelation 21:3 is the goal toward which all of Scripture has been moving: God dwelling with His people in a restored Eden. The tabernacle, the temple, the incarnation, the church—all pointed to this moment. The far distant ends of revelation embrace each other: Eden lost in Genesis 3 is restored and exceeded in Revelation 21-22."

Application: Believers should live with eternity in view. The cherubim that barred the way since Genesis 3:24 are removed in Christ. We currently dwell with God by the Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16), and we will dwell with Him directly in the new creation (Revelation 21:3). This hope transforms how we face suffering: "He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away" (Revelation 21:4). The trajectory is complete: from exile outside Eden, past cherubim guarding the way, to eternal dwelling in God's immediate presence.

The trajectory: Cherubim bar the way (Genesis 3:24) → Cherubim in tabernacle/temple (Exodus, 1 Kings) → Cherubim depart with glory (Ezekiel 10-11) → Christ opens the way (Hebrews 10:19-20) → Spirit indwells church (1 Corinthians 3:16) → God dwells directly with humanity, cherubim absent (Revelation 21:3, 22). Christ is the fulfillment of every stage, and we are the glorified humanity the cherubim represented.
