Ephesians 2:18

Greek Key Terms:

  • G4318 προσαγωγή (prosagōgē) - "access, approach, introduction"
  • G297 ἀμφότεροι (amphoteroi) - "both"
  • G1722 ἐν (en) - "in, by"
  • G1520 εἷς (heis) - "one"
  • G4151 πνεῦμα (pneuma) - "Spirit"
  • G3962 πατήρ (patēr) - "Father"

Context: Ephesians 2:11-22 explains how Christ reconciled Jews and Gentiles into one new humanity. Gentiles were once "separate from Christ, alienated from the citizenship of Israel, strangers to the covenants of promise" (v. 12). But Christ "is our peace, who made the two one and broke down the barrier of the dividing wall" (v. 14). Through His cross, He reconciled both groups "to God in one body" (v. 16). Verse 18 summarizes the result: "For through Him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit." The "access" (προσαγωγή) implies someone who introduces another into a king's presence—Christ has opened the door to the Father for all who are in Him.

OT-to-OT Development:

  • Isaiah 22:22 established the steward who controls access: "What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open."
  • Exodus 26:31-33 describes the veil separating Holy Place from Most Holy Place—access to God's immediate presence was restricted to the high priest once yearly.
  • Isaiah 56:6-8 prophesied Gentile inclusion: "Foreigners who bind themselves to the LORD... I will bring to My holy mountain... for My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations."

Connections:

  • TO OT: Isaiah 22:22 (access authority), Exodus 26:31-33 (restricted access via veil), Isaiah 56:6-8 (Gentile access promised)
  • FROM EPHESIANS: Ephesians 2:13 (brought near by Christ's blood), Ephesians 3:12 (boldness and confident access through faith in Christ)
  • NT PARALLELS: Hebrews 10:19-22 (confidence to enter by Christ's blood), Romans 5:1-2 (access into grace), John 14:6 (no one comes to the Father except through Christ)

Connection Method(s): Typology (Direct, Forward-Looking), Redemptive-Historical Progression — Christ fulfills Eliakim's access-granting role with infinite escalation: from palace access to Trinitarian access to the Father, permanently opened by Christ's blood for both Jews and Gentiles.

Christological Connection: Christ fulfills and transcends Eliakim's role as the one who grants access: (1) Greater House: Eliakim controlled access to Hezekiah's palace; Christ grants access to the Father's presence—the throne room of the universe. (2) Universal Access: Eliakim served Jerusalem's inhabitants; Christ opens access to "all peoples"—Jew and Gentile united. (3) Permanent Opening: Eliakim's door could be opened or shut; Christ has permanently opened access—"we have access" (present tense, ongoing reality). (4) Trinitarian Mediation: Access comes "through Him" (Christ) and "by one Spirit" to "the Father"—the entire Trinity involved in bringing believers home. (5) Blood-Bought Access: Ephesians 2:13 grounds this access in Christ's blood: "But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ." The Key-Bearer paid with His life to open the door. This is why believers can "draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith" (Heb 10:22)—Christ's key has opened permanent access.
