Context: The angel Gabriel announces to Mary that she will conceive and bear the long-awaited Messiah. This is the moment Genesis 3:15 begins its final fulfillment—the seed of the woman is about to arrive.

OT-to-OT Development:

Connections:

  • TO OT: Genesis 3:15 (protoevangelium); Isaiah 7:14 (virgin conception); 2 Samuel 7:12-16 (Davidic throne); Psalm 132:11 (fruit of David's body on throne)
  • FROM NT:

Connection Method(s): Promise-Fulfillment, Typology (Direct, Forward-Looking) — Mary fulfills both Genesis 3:15 (the woman whose seed crushes the serpent) and Isaiah 7:14 (the virgin who conceives Immanuel), becoming the Davidic mother of the eternal King through obedient faith.

Christological Connection: Gabriel's announcement to Mary is the moment when the Eve trajectory reaches its climax — the seed of the woman is about to arrive. Mary is the ultimate "woman" of Genesis 3:15, the virgin of Isaiah 7:14, and the Davidic mother of the eternal King. Gabriel's words weave together multiple OT strands: "He will be great" (divine dignity), "Son of the Most High" (divine sonship), "the throne of his father David" (Davidic covenant, 2 Samuel 7:12-16), "his kingdom will have no end" (eschatological fulfillment).

The contrast between Eve and Mary is theologically rich. Eve received the serpent's word and disobeyed God; Mary received God's word and obeyed: "Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word" (Luke 1:38). Eve's disobedience brought the curse and the promise of redemption; Mary's obedience of faith became the means through which redemption entered the world. Eve reached for the forbidden fruit, grasping what was not hers; Mary received the gift of the Son, accepting what was given. This is not to say Mary's obedience earned salvation — rather, she is the faithful recipient of sovereign grace, the exemplar of how God works through human faith to accomplish His redemptive purposes.

Mary as daughter of Eve becomes mother of the Second Adam (1 Corinthians 15:45). Her Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55) echoes Hannah's song (1 Samuel 2:1-10), placing her within the line of mothers-of-promise whose barrenness or impossibility God overcame to advance the seed. All believers become spiritual children of this woman's seed through faith in Christ (Galatians 3:29).

Already: the seed has come, the kingdom has been inaugurated, and Jesus reigns on David's throne at the Father's right hand. Not yet: "his kingdom will have no end" — the visible, consummated, eternal reign when all enemies are subdued (1 Corinthians 15:25).
