Hebrews 6:19-20

Greek Key Terms:

  • ψυχή (psychē) - soul, life

Context: Hebrews 6:13-20 addresses the certainty of God's promises. God swore by Himself to Abraham (vv. 13-15), and His oath is unchangeable (vv. 16-18). Verses 19-20 apply this to believers' hope in Christ.

    • Leviticus 23:9-14 - Feast of First Fruits: the first sheaf guarantees the harvest
    • Leviticus 16:2 - , 12-15 (the high priest enters behind the veil on the Day of Atonement
  • FROM OT:
  • FROM NT:
    • Hebrews 10:19-20 - we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way through the curtain
    • 1 Corinthians 15:20 - Christ the firstfruits

Connection Method(s): Typology (Direct, Forward-Looking), Redemptive-Historical Progression — Christ as "forerunner" who entered heaven ahead of believers is functionally identical to Christ as firstfruits: He goes first, we follow, His accomplishment secures ours, guaranteeing that where He is, believers will be.

Christological Connection: The concept of Christ as forerunner is identical in function to Christ as firstfruits. 1 Corinthians 15:20: Christ is the firstfruits of resurrection—the first to rise, guaranteeing that the full harvest (all believers) will rise. Hebrews 6:20: Christ is the forerunner who entered heaven ahead of us, guaranteeing that we will enter. Hebrews 2:10: Christ is the "founder" (ἀρχηγός, archēgos, pioneer, leader) of salvation, bringing many sons to glory. The pattern is consistent: Christ goes first; we follow. His accomplishment secures ours. The escalation from the OT feast: Israel's firstfruits sheaf guaranteed one year's barley harvest; Christ's resurrection and ascension guarantee eternal glory for all believers. The forerunner has entered; we are coming. The firstfruits have been presented; the full harvest follows. What God promised (Hebrews 6:13-18), Christ secured (Hebrews 6:19-20), believers will inherit (Hebrews 6:12).

Application: Your hope is anchored in Christ, the forerunner. Do you live with this confidence? An anchor's purpose is to keep a ship from drifting in storms. Life's trials, doubts, and temptations are storms that threaten to push you off course. What anchors you? Christ has entered behind the veil—into heaven itself, into God's presence—as your forerunner. He is there on your behalf (Hebrews 9:24). This is not wishful thinking but objective reality: Christ ascended, sits at the Father's right hand (Hebrews 1:3), and intercedes for you (Hebrews 7:25). Because He is there, you will be there. The forerunner guarantees the followers. The firstfruits guarantee the harvest. Anchor your soul in this hope. When doubts assail, remember: Christ has gone ahead. When trials overwhelm, remember: your anchor holds. When death approaches, remember: the forerunner has opened the way. Where He is, you will be.
