Revelation 21:1-4

Greek Key Terms:

  • καινὸν (kainon) - "new" - qualitatively new, not merely chronologically new (21:1, 5)
  • σκηνὴ τοῦ θεοῦ (skēnē tou theou) - "tabernacle of God" - dwelling place, tent (21:3)
  • σκηνώσει (skēnōsei) - "will dwell/tabernacle" - take up residence (21:3)
  • ἐξαλείψει (exaleipsei) - "will wipe away" - completely remove (21:4)
  • πρῶτα (prōta) - "former things" - old order passed away (21:4)

Context: Climax of Revelation; follows final judgment (20:11-15); introduces New Jerusalem descending (21:2, 9-22:5). Part of "all things new" vision (21:5). Brackets entire Scripture: Genesis 1-2 (original creation) → Revelation 21-22 (new creation).

Connections:

Connection Method(s): Redemptive-Historical Progression, Longitudinal Theme — The new creation consummates the Garden Commission: from localized Eden to cosmic dwelling of God with humanity, with "no longer anything accursed" (Rev 22:3) and glorified humanity reigning with Christ forever, fulfilling the mandate to "fill the earth."

Christological Connection: Christ accomplishes new creation through death/resurrection and consummates it at second coming. Ultimate escalation of Garden Commission: Genesis 1:28 commanded Adam to "fill the earth" with God's presence by multiplying image-bearers; Revelation 21:1-4 shows earth filled with God's presence eternally. Matthew 28:18-20 (Great Commission: "make disciples of all nations") finds fulfillment in Revelation 5:9 ("ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation") and 7:9 ("a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages"). Trajectory complete: From localized Eden → to frustrated commission (Fall) → to renewed commission (Abraham) → to Israel's land as Eden-prototype → to prophetic vision (Isaiah 11:9: "earth shall be full of knowledge of LORD") → to Christ inaugurating kingdom → to Great Commission advancing kingdom → to new creation where commission is fulfilled. Revelation 21:3: "the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them" - no longer localized to garden or temple but cosmic dwelling. Habakkuk 2:14 realized: "the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea." All curse removed (Revelation 22:3, reversing Genesis 3:17-19). Servants worship and "reign forever and ever" (22:5) - Adamic dominion restored and escalated. From Adam commissioned to extend small garden → to glorified multitude filling entire new creation with worship and dominion. Sacred space no longer expands into secular space; all reality is sacred space because "the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb" are its temple (21:22). Garden Commission consummated eternally.
