2 Corinthians 2:15

Context:

2 Corinthians 2:14-17 is a crescendo of apostolic self-description. Having just described his anxious search for Titus (vv. 12-13), Paul breaks into doxology: "But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere" (v. 14). The imagery is drawn from the Roman triumph, in which a victorious general paraded through the city followed by prisoners, officials, and smoke from burning incense. Paul appropriates this cultural image and redeploys it with priestly resonance: "For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life" (vv. 15-16).
