Ephesians 2:14-18

Greek Key Terms:

  • G2537 καινός (kainos) - new (in quality)
  • G2936 κτίζω (ktizo) - to create
  • G444 ἄνθρωπος (anthropos) - humanity, human being
  • G2643 καταλλάσσω (katallasso) - to reconcile
  • G4334 προσαγωγή (prosagoge) - access, approach

Context: Ephesians 2:11-22 describes the cosmic reconciliation accomplished through Christ's cross. Jesus "made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility" (v. 14) between Jew and Gentile. His purpose was "to create in himself one new humanity out of the two" (v. 15), reconciling both to God through the cross. The result: both have access to the Father by one Spirit (v. 18). This "one new humanity" (hena kainon anthropon) is new creation language—Christ creates something that never existed before: a unified people from all nations, transcending ethnic and religious divisions.

OT-to-OT Development:

  • Genesis 1:26-27 - God creates humanity (male and female) in His image; Christ creates new humanity in His image
  • Genesis 12:3 - Through Abraham's seed "all nations will be blessed"—fulfilled in new humanity
  • Isaiah 19:23-25 - Vision of Egypt, Assyria, and Israel united in worship (anticipates multi-ethnic people of God)
  • Isaiah 56:3-8 - Foreigners and eunuchs included in God's house; "my house will be called a house of prayer for all nations"
  • Ezekiel 37:22 - "I will make them one nation... they will never again be two nations"

Christological Connection: Christ creates "one new humanity" through His cross, demonstrating His role as the Second Adam who surpasses the first. Where Adam's fall fractured humanity (leading to Babel's division—Genesis 11:1-9), Christ's death and resurrection reunites humanity in Himself. This demonstrates Fairbairn's principle of escalation in profound ways:

(1) Scope of Unity: Original humanity in Adam shared biological descent; new humanity in Christ shares spiritual union transcending race, ethnicity, and social status. The unity is deeper than natural kinship.

(2) Basis of Unity: Adam's unity was creational (common ancestry); Christ's unity is redemptive (purchased by blood—Revelation 5:9). The new surpasses the old in permanence and security.

(3) Purpose of Unity: Original humanity was to fill the earth and exercise dominion; new humanity is to display God's manifold wisdom to cosmic powers (Ephesians 3:10) and worship God from every tribe and tongue (Revelation 7:9-10). The eschatological purpose exceeds the creational mandate.

(4) Access to God: Original humanity had mediated access to God in Eden's garden-sanctuary; new humanity has direct access to the Father through Christ by the Spirit (Ephesians 2:18), anticipating face-to-face communion (Revelation 22:4).

The "one new humanity" is explicitly new creation language (ktizo—create), showing that Christ doesn't merely restore Adamic humanity but creates something unprecedented. This new humanity is built on the foundation of apostles and prophets, with Christ as cornerstone (Ephesians 2:20), growing into a holy temple where God dwells by His Spirit (Ephesians 2:21-22). The escalation is cosmic: where original creation featured one people (humanity) in one place (Eden), new creation features one people from all nations (Revelation 7:9) in the New Jerusalem descending from heaven (Revelation 21:2), where God dwells with humanity forever. The dividing wall is destroyed, all barriers removed, and Christ's reconciling work creates eternal unity that far surpasses Adam's original harmony.

Connection Method(s): Typology (Providential, Forward-Looking), Contrast — Original humanity in Adam typologically prefigures the "one new humanity" Christ creates through His cross, with contrast between Adam's fractured humanity and Christ's reconciled, multinational people transcending all ethnic divisions.
