Greek Key Terms:
Context: 2 Corinthians 3 defends Paul's apostolic ministry against critics in Corinth who demanded letters of recommendation (v. 1). Paul argues that the Corinthians themselves are his "letter of recommendation" (vv. 2-3)—living proof of the Spirit's transforming work. Verses 6-18 contrast the old covenant (Law) with the new covenant (Spirit).
Connections:
Christological Connection: The contrast between Sinai and Pentecost is Paul's central argument. Sinai (old covenant): Law written on stone tablets (Exodus 31:18), external obedience required, hearts unchanged, 3,000 died (Exodus 32:28), glory fading. Pentecost (new covenant): Law written on hearts (Jeremiah 31:33; Hebrews 10:16), internal transformation accomplished, 3,000 saved (Acts 2:41), glory permanent. Paul writes, "The letter kills, but the Spirit gives life" (v. 6). The Law diagnosed the disease (sin) but could not cure it. The Spirit transforms hearts, enabling obedience from within. Verse 18 describes the Spirit's work: "We all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit." The escalation: Moses saw God's glory and his face shone temporarily (Exodus 34:29-35); believers behold Christ's glory and are progressively transformed into His image permanently. What the Law could not do (change hearts), the Spirit achieves (sanctification).
Application: Recognize the Spirit's superiority. The old covenant was glorious but temporary; the new covenant is more glorious and permanent. Don't seek to live under the Law's condemnation; live in the Spirit's freedom. Romans 8:1: "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." Be transformed, not merely informed. The Law informed (revealed God's standards) but did not transform. The Spirit transforms—progressively changing you into Christ's likeness (v. 18). Are you being transformed, or are you stuck in external religion? True Christianity is heart transformation, not behavior modification. Behold Christ's glory. Verse 18: "Beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed." Transformation comes from gazing at Christ (in His Word, in prayer, in worship). The more you see His glory, the more you become like Him. Are you beholding Christ, or are you distracted by the world? Remove the veil. Verse 16: "When one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed." If you're trusting in your performance, the veil remains. Turn to Christ; trust His finished work. The Spirit gives life.
Connection Method(s): Contrast, Typology (Direct, Backward-Looking) — Paul contrasts the old covenant's ministry of death/condemnation on stone with the new covenant's ministry of Spirit/righteousness on hearts, showing Pentecost's surpassing glory over Sinai.
