1 Peter 2:9-10; Hebrews 12:22-24

Greek Key Terms:

  • G1085 γένος (genos) - race, people
  • G1588 ἐκλεκτός (eklektos) - chosen, elect
  • G2992 λαός (laos) - people
  • G1577 ἐκκλησία (ekklesia) - assembly, church

Context: 1 Peter 2:9-10: "You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession... Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people (λαὸς θεοῦ)." Hebrews 12:22-24: "You have come to Mount Zion... and to the assembly (ἐκκλησίᾳ) of the firstborn."

OT-to-OT Development:

  • Exodus 19:5-6 - Israel as kingdom of priests
  • Hosea 1:9; 2:23 - "not my people" → "my people"
  • Peter applies both to the church

Connections:

Christological Connection: The church's identity as "chosen race" and "holy nation" is "in Christ." We are elect because we are united to the Elect One (1 Peter 2:4, "living stone, rejected... but in God's sight chosen"). Hebrews emphasizes that we approach God through Jesus the mediator (12:24). The remnant community exists only because of its connection to Christ. As He is the cornerstone (1 Peter 2:6), we are living stones built on Him.

Connection Method(s): Promise-Fulfillment; Longitudinal Theme — The church as "chosen race, royal priesthood, holy nation" fulfills Exodus 19:5-6 and Hosea's "not my people" reversal (1 Pet 2:10), with believers' identity grounded in union with the Elect One, Christ the cornerstone.
