Context: Acts 4:1-22 records Peter and John's arrest after healing a lame beggar at the temple gate and preaching Christ's resurrection. They are brought before the Sanhedrin (the same council that condemned Jesus) and questioned: "By what power or name did you do this?" Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, boldly declares that the healing came through "the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead." He then quotes Psalm 118:22, identifying Jesus as the rejected stone and the Sanhedrin as the builders who rejected Him. Peter concludes with the exclusive claim: "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved."

OT-to-OT Development:

  • Psalm 118:22-23 - The rejected stone becomes the cornerstone (Peter quotes this)
  • Isaiah 28:16 - The precious cornerstone in Zion; whoever believes will not be shaken
  • Isaiah 8:14 - Stone of stumbling and rock of offense
  • Daniel 2:34-35 - The stone kingdom that fills the earth

Connections:

Christological Connection: Peter's sermon is the first apostolic application of Psalm 118:22 to the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. The pattern is clear:

  1. Rejection by builders = Sanhedrin's condemnation and crucifixion of Jesus
  2. Became the cornerstone = God's vindication through resurrection and exaltation
  3. No other name = Jesus alone is the foundation for salvation

Peter's proclamation establishes several crucial truths:

  • The Stone's rejection was not accidental but prophesied in Scripture
  • The builders (Israel's leaders) bear responsibility for rejecting God's chosen Stone
  • God reversed their verdict through resurrection, making Jesus the cornerstone
  • Salvation is exclusively through this Stone—"no other name under heaven"
  • The Stone is now the foundation of a new building—the church

The exclusive claim in verse 12 connects the stone metaphor to soteriology: just as a building needs a foundation, and no other foundation can be substituted, so salvation requires Jesus and no other savior suffices. This echoes Paul's later statement: "For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ" (1 Corinthians 3:11). The rejected Stone has become the only Stone—chosen, precious, and absolutely necessary. Those who build on Him will not be shaken (Isaiah 28:16; Matthew 7:24-25); those who reject Him have no other hope. The cornerstone determines the alignment of the entire building; Christ determines the shape of the church and the terms of salvation.

Connection Method(s): Promise-Fulfillment; Redemptive-Historical Progression — Peter's apostolic proclamation identifies Jesus as the fulfillment of Psalm 118:22's rejected cornerstone, declaring that salvation is found in no other name — the stone prophecy becomes the foundation of exclusive soteriology.
