Context: 1 Peter 2:4-10 develops the corporate identity of the church as God's new temple and priesthood, built on Christ the living Stone. Peter has just exhorted believers to crave pure spiritual milk (2:1-3) and to taste that the Lord is good (Psalm 34:8). He now transitions to ecclesiology: believers come to Christ, the living Stone, and become living stones themselves, built into a spiritual house to serve as a holy priesthood. Peter weaves together three OT stone passages (Isaiah 28:16; Psalm 118:22; Isaiah 8:14) to show Christ's dual function: precious cornerstone to believers, stumbling stone to the disobedient. This is the most comprehensive NT synthesis of the stone testimony.

OT-to-OT Development:

  • Isaiah 28:16 - Precious cornerstone in Zion; whoever believes will not be put to shame (Peter quotes LXX in v. 6)
  • Psalm 118:22 - Stone rejected by builders becomes the cornerstone (Peter quotes in v. 7)
  • Isaiah 8:14 - Stone of stumbling and rock of offense (Peter quotes in v. 8)
  • Exodus 19:5-6 - Israel as kingdom of priests and holy nation (applied to church in v. 9)

Connections:

Christological Connection: Peter's passage is the fullest NT exposition of Christ as the Stone. He synthesizes three OT stone texts to reveal Christ's comprehensive identity:

  1. Living Stone (v. 4) - Unlike dead memorial stones, Christ is the living, life-giving foundation. He died and rose again, and now imparts life to those who come to Him.
  1. Rejected by men, chosen by God (v. 4) - The pattern of Psalm 118:22 fulfilled in Jesus' crucifixion (human rejection) and resurrection (divine vindication). Human builders declared Him unfit; God made Him the cornerstone.
  1. Precious cornerstone in Zion (v. 6, quoting Isaiah 28:16) - Christ is chosen by God, precious beyond measure, the sure foundation laid in Zion. Whoever believes in Him will not be put to shame—guaranteed security and honor at the final judgment.
  1. Precious to believers (v. 7) - For those who believe, Christ is the treasure, the pearl of great price (Matthew 13:46), supremely valuable and beautiful. He is their foundation, identity, and glory.
  1. Stone of stumbling to the disobedient (vv. 7-8, combining Psalm 118:22 and Isaiah 8:14) - For those who reject Christ, He becomes their downfall. They stumble because they disobey the word, refusing to build their lives on Him. Their stumbling was appointed—divine sovereignty ordains that Christ will divide humanity into believers and rejecters.
  1. Foundation of spiritual house (v. 5) - Christ is the cornerstone of God's new temple, the church. This fulfills Isaiah's Zion imagery and David's desire to build God a house. The church is not made of physical stones but "living stones"—believers organically connected to Christ.
  1. Basis of holy priesthood (v. 5, 9) - Because believers are built on Christ the cornerstone, they become a holy priesthood offering spiritual sacrifices. This transfers the Exodus 19:5-6 identity from ethnic Israel to the multinational church—all believers are priests with direct access to God through Christ.

Peter shows that the Stone is not merely an architectural metaphor but the heart of soteriology and ecclesiology. Christ is the exclusive foundation ("no other name," Acts 4:12; "no other foundation," 1 Corinthians 3:11). The church's entire identity derives from being built on Him. Those who build on Christ become like Him—living stones in a living temple. Those who reject Him stumble and fall, fulfilling the warnings of Isaiah 8:14 and Matthew 21:44. The dual function is inescapable: the Stone either upholds you or crushes you. There is no neutral position.

Connection Method(s): Promise-Fulfillment; Typology (Direct, Forward-Looking); Contrast — Peter's comprehensive synthesis of three OT stone texts (Isa 28:16, Ps 118:22, Isa 8:14) shows Christ as both precious cornerstone to believers and stumbling stone to the disobedient, fulfilling the prophetic promises and contrasting salvation with judgment.
