Greek Key Terms:
Context: John 6 records the feeding of the five thousand (vv. 1-15) and Jesus walking on water (vv. 16-21), followed by the Bread of Life Discourse (vv. 22-71). The crowd seeks Jesus for more physical bread. Jesus redirects them to spiritual bread: Himself.
Connections:
Christological Connection: Christ is the ultimate unleavened bread—perfectly pure, without corruption or sin. Unlike leavened bread (which rises through fermentation/decay), Christ is the sinless bread of God. Hebrews 4:15: "tempted as we are, yet without sin." Hebrews 7:26: "holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners." 1 Peter 2:22: "He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth." The Feast of Unleavened Bread required bread without leaven (corruption). Christ is the bread without corruption—the pure provision from heaven. When we feed on Him by faith, we receive not corrupted sustenance but pure, life-giving nourishment. He is the antitype of both manna (bread from heaven) and unleavened bread (bread without corruption).
Application: Are you feeding on Christ, the Bread of Life? Many seek Jesus for temporal benefits (John 6:26: "you seek me...because you ate your fill of the loaves") but not for Himself. Do you come to Jesus for what He gives, or for who He is? To "eat" this bread means to believe—to trust Christ entirely for salvation, to depend on Him continuously for spiritual life. Have you come to Him? Have you believed? If so, He promises you will never hunger or thirst spiritually. Feed daily on His Word, commune with Him in prayer, trust His promises. He is your sufficient provision.
Connection Method(s): Typology (Direct, Forward-Looking) — Christ is the ultimate unleavened bread—perfectly pure, without corruption or sin—fulfilling both manna (bread from heaven) and unleavened bread (bread without corruption) as the sinless Bread of Life.
