Greek Key Terms:
Context: After Jesus died on the cross, a soldier pierced His side to confirm death. Unexpectedly, both blood and water flowed out. John emphasizes the eyewitness nature of this event (19:35: "He who saw it has borne witness") and its theological significance. This is the only Gospel to record this detail.

Christological Connection: John 19:34 is the climactic fulfillment of Numbers 19's water of purification typology. The red heifer ritual required two distinct elements: (1) ashes from the sacrificed heifer (representing blood atonement); (2) living water from a spring (representing the Spirit). These had to be mixed together—neither alone could purify. From Christ's pierced side, both elements flow simultaneously: blood and water. The symbolism is profound. The blood represents Christ's atoning sacrifice—the reality to which the red heifer's ashes pointed (Hebrews 9:13-14). The water represents the Holy Spirit—the living water Jesus promised (John 7:38-39). What was separated in the OT type (sacrifice producing ashes, then water added) flows together from Christ's crucified body. He is both the sacrifice and the source of living water, both the Lamb slain and the fountain opened. Mather explains: "This water and blood, is the blood of Justification, and the water of Sanctification, both plentifully flowing from Christ our Purification." The dual flow teaches that salvation requires both: Christ's blood for forgiveness and the Spirit for regeneration, justification and sanctification, atonement and application. As 1 John 5:6 insists: "not by water only but by water and blood"—both are necessary. The piercing of Christ's side releases what Numbers 19 required: the means of purification from death. Death pierced Christ; from that wound flows the antidote to death—cleansing blood and life-giving Spirit.
Connection Method(s): Typology (Direct, Backward-Looking); Redemptive-Historical Progression — Blood and water flowing from Christ's pierced side unite the two purification elements (sacrifice and living water) that Numbers 19 separated, with Christ as both the sacrifice and the source of the Spirit.
