Significance: Jesus applies Isaiah's prophetic commission to explain his parabolic teaching method. Isaiah was sent to a people whose hearts were already hard, and his preaching confirmed them in their rejection. Similarly, Jesus' parables reveal mysteries to humble seekers but confirm unbelievers in their blindness. This is not arbitrary predestination but judicial hardening - God confirming people in their freely-chosen rejection. The pattern recurs throughout redemptive history: the same message that enlightens some hardens others based on their prior heart disposition.
NT Use Pattern: Ironic / Inverted — Isaiah's hardening commission is reapplied — Jesus's parables now do to Israel what Isaiah's preaching once did. The OT text functions to predict (and execute) the present hardening of the covenant people.
