Matthew 2:15 to Hosea 11:1

NT Text: Matthew 2:15

OT Source(s):

Source: Beale & Carson (eds.), Commentary on the New Testament Use of the Old Testament (2007); Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

Reference Type: Direct Quotation

Connection Method(s): Typology

Anchor Text: Hos 11:1 — Out of Egypt I Called My Son

Significance: Classic example of Matthew's typology where Hosea's original reference to the Exodus is applied to Jesus. Jesus recapitulates Israel's history but succeeds where corporate Israel failed. This establishes Jesus as the true Israel, the faithful Son who perfectly obeys the Father. Matthew sees Jesus not merely predic ted by OT but reliving Israel's story in his own life.
