Significance: The crowds acclaim Jesus using Psalm 118 from the Hallel collection traditionally sung at Passover and Tabernacles. "Hosanna" means "save now," invoking divine deliverance. "He who comes in the Lord's name" carried messianic connotations in Second Temple Judaism. By adding "Son of David," the crowds make explicit messianic interpretation unmistakable. The scene is deeply ironic - crowds acclaim without full understanding of what kind of Messiah Jesus is, and many will later demand his crucifixion. Yet their words speak prophetic truth about Jesus' identity.
