Anchor Text: Ps 118:22 — The Stone the Builders Rejected
Significance: Jesus quotes Psalm 118:22-23, applying the rejected-stone-become-cornerstone pattern to himself. The builders (Jewish leaders) reject the stone (Jesus), but God makes him the cornerstone of the new temple-community. This continues Psalm 118's theme from the triumphal entry (11:9-10) and establishes the rejection-vindication pattern central to Mark's gospel. The religious leaders recognize Jesus' self-application (12:12) and seek to arrest him. This stone saying becomes foundational for early Christian ecclesiology and christology, showing how rejection leads to exaltation.
