Significance: Jesus employs standard prophetic imagery of cosmic dissolution to describe Jerusalem's temple destruction (not the world's end). Isaiah 13:10 judged Babylon, while Isaiah 34:4 judged Edom—both linking enemy destruction with Israel's salvation. Withdrawal of heavenly lights signals God's judgment on idolatrous nations and apostate Israel throughout the prophets. Jesus scandalously applies these oracles against Babylon and Edom to Jerusalem itself, declaring that apostate Jerusalem has become like Edom-Babylon, and Roman armies are God's instruments of judgment. The cosmic language expresses the event's theological magnitude—the temple at creation's center is destroyed, ending the world as it was.
