Significance: Jesus applies Isaiah's hardening commission to his contemporaries. Isaiah was told his preaching would harden Israel, confirming their rejection. Similarly, Jesus' parables reveal truth to receptive hearts (insiders) while concealing it from hardened ones (outsiders). This isn't arbitrary cruelty but judicial confirmation of chosen hardness. The passive divine construction ("so that") reflects God's sovereign purposes working through human choices. Yet Mark hints at hope—some hardened hearts will eventually soften (4:33; 8:22-26).
NT Use Pattern: Ironic / Inverted — Isaiah's hardening commission reapplied to the present parabolic teaching — the parables themselves harden the hearers, fulfilling Isaiah 6 in reverse-rhetorical effect.
