Anchor Text: Isa 52:13-53:12 — The Suffering Servant

Significance: The second passion prediction in Mark 9:31 — "The Son of Man will be delivered (paradidotai) into the hands of men" — uses the passive voice of paradidōmi ("to hand over, deliver") in a way that closely echoes Isaiah 52:13-53:12. Isaiah 53:12 states that the Servant "poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors." The LXX of Isaiah 53:12 uses paredothē ("he was delivered over") — the same verbal pattern Jesus employs in Mark's passion predictions. The divine passive ("will be delivered") implies both human agency and divine purpose, precisely as Isaiah 53 presents the Servant's suffering: it is the LORD's will that he be crushed (53:10) even as human agents carry it out. The second passion prediction thus continues the Servant Song framework introduced in the first (Mark 8:31), deepening the Isaiah 53 identification.
