Significance: Jesus alludes to Leviticus 2:13's requirement that all offerings be seasoned with salt, called "the salt of the covenant." Salt represented covenant faithfulness, preservation, and purification. Jesus' saying "salted with fire" combines salt imagery with fire's refining quality, suggesting that disciples will undergo trials that purify and preserve their faith. Just as sacrifices required salt to be acceptable to God, disciples must endure purifying trials to remain faithful. This connects to covenant loyalty and the cost of discipleship, preparing followers for the suffering ahead.
