Significance: Gabriel's announcement that John will come "in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children" (Luke 1:17) directly echoes Malachi 4:6, the final prophetic word of the Hebrew canon. The Hebrew wĕhēšîb lēb-'ābôt ʿal-bānîm ("he will turn the heart of the fathers to the children") is reproduced almost verbatim in Luke's Greek rendering (epistrépsai kardías paterōn epi tekna). Malachi 4:5-6 promised a second Elijah before "the great and dreadful day of the LORD," and Gabriel's announcement to Zechariah identifies John as the fulfillment of that anticipation. Jesus later confirms this identification (Matthew 11:14; 17:12). The turning of hearts signals the covenant-renewal task that John's preparatory ministry would accomplish — reconciling estranged relationships as a sign of Israel's readiness for her Messiah.
