Anchor Text: 2 Sam 7:12-16 — The Davidic Covenant
Significance: Gabriel's announcement to Mary is the Davidic Covenant coming to its fulfillment. In 2 Samuel 7:12-16 the LORD promises David an offspring "from your own body" whose kingdom he will "establish," whose throne he will make "established forever," and to whom he says "I will be his Father, and he will be My son." Luke 1:32-33 gathers up each strand: "The Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David, and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever. His kingdom will never end" — the throne of David, the everlasting reign, the unending kingdom, paired with "He will be called the Son of the Most High," answering the covenant's father-son formula. The Connection Method is Promise-Fulfillment, and the shared vocabulary (throne of David, kingdom, forever, son) makes the dependence explicit. Solomon and his line partially and provisionally embodied the promise but every one of them died and the throne eventually fell; the "forever" of 2 Samuel 7 awaited a son who could reign without end. Christ is that son — the everlasting King in whom the Davidic Covenant is not merely renewed but consummated. The desirability is the security of his reign: a kingdom that "will never end" is good news precisely because its King lives forever to keep covenant with his people.
