Significance: Mary's Magnificat is patterned on Hannah's Song, the Old Testament's great hymn of reversal. Luke 1:48—"He has looked with favor on the humble state of His servant"—echoes Hannah's plea that the LORD "look on the affliction of Your servant" (1 Samuel 1:11) and her celebration that God lifts up the lowly (1 Samuel 2:1-10). Both are humble servants whose God-given fruitfulness becomes the occasion for a song magnifying the God who regards the lowly and overturns human estimations of greatness. Hannah's son Samuel anointed Israel's first kings; Mary's Son is himself the King whose reign has no end—an escalation from the maker of kings to the Messiah he foreshadows.
