Significance: Mary's closing Magnificat verses — "He has helped His servant Israel, remembering to be merciful, as He promised to our fathers, to Abraham and his descendants forever" (Luke 1:54-55) — draw directly from Micah 7:20: "You will be faithful to Jacob, and show mercy to Abraham, as you pledged on oath to our ancestors in days long ago." The Hebrew tittēn ʾĕmet lĕ-yaʿăqōb ḥesed lĕ-ʾabrāhām ("faithfulness to Jacob, loyal love to Abraham") finds its Greek counterpart in Luke's mnēsthēnai eleous ("remembering mercy"). Both texts look back to the Abrahamic covenant as the anchor of God's saving action; Micah anticipates a future fulfillment of this oath, and Mary's song announces that the fulfillment has now arrived in the incarnation of her Son. The Magnificat thus situates the advent of Christ within the long arc of covenantal promise stretching from Genesis through the prophets.
