Significance: The Benedictus describes the Dawn's purpose as shining "on those who live in darkness and in the shadow of death" (Luke 1:79), language that directly recalls Isaiah 9:2: "The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned." The Greek epiphanai tois en skotei kai skiā thanatou kathēmenois ("to shine on those sitting in darkness and the shadow of death") is substantially drawn from Isaiah's oracle of messianic light in the northern territories. Isaiah 9:1-7 is one of the clearest forward-looking messianic prophecies in the Hebrew Bible, naming the Davidic child as Wonderful Counselor and Prince of Peace. The Benedictus thus frames the ministry of John and, through him, of Jesus, as the fulfillment of Isaiah's Galilean dawn — light breaking into the darkness of exile and death. Matthew 4:15-16 makes the same connection explicit.
