Significance: Jesus' instruction "If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him" (Luke 17:3) develops the Levitical command of 19:17: hôkēaḥ tôkîaḥ ʾet-ʿămîtekā ("you shall certainly rebuke your neighbor"). Leviticus 19:17 contrasts the passive-aggressive response of nursing hatred in one's heart with the active care of frank fraternal rebuke. The context — following the prohibition of hatred toward one's brother — frames rebuke as an act of love rather than judgment. Jesus extends the Levitical principle into the covenant community of the Kingdom, adding the corresponding obligation: when repentance follows rebuke, forgiveness must follow immediately and repeatedly (Luke 17:4 extends to seven times in a day). The passage in Luke 17:3-4 is one of the clearest instances where Jesus is not abolishing the Mosaic law but intensifying and completing it within the relational dynamics of the new covenant community.
