Anchor Text: Isa 49:1-6 — A Light to the Nations
Significance: Simeon's Nunc Dimittis — "a light for revelation to the Gentiles (phōs eis apokalypsin ethnōn), and for glory to Your people Israel" (Luke 2:32) — is drawn almost verbatim from the second Servant Song of Isaiah: "I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth" (lĕ-ʾôr gôyim, Isaiah 49:6). Simeon identifies the infant Jesus as the Servant of the LORD whose mission extends beyond Israel to encompass all nations. The structure mirrors Isaiah's distinction between Israel and the nations: the Servant brings "glory" (doxa) to Israel and "revelation" to the Gentiles, suggesting that Israel's covenantal privileges are now mediated through this one child. Acts 13:47 and Acts 26:23 make the same connection explicit in Paul's mission theology. This is one of the earliest post-birth interpretations of Jesus' identity, placing him squarely within the Servant trajectory of Second Isaiah.
