Anchor Text: Dan 7:13-14 — The Son of Man Receiving Dominion
Significance: Luke's Olivet Discourse declares, "At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory" (Luke 21:27) — the Lukan parallel to Matthew 24:30 and Mark 13:26. The title "Son of Man," the cloud, and the power and great glory render Daniel 7:13's vision of "One like the Son of Man coming with the clouds of heaven" who is then given dominion and glory (7:14). Luke streamlines the imagery to a single cloud but preserves the Danielic core. The connection is promise-fulfillment: the coming of the Son of Man that Daniel saw is identified by Jesus as His own future appearing in glory. Notably, Luke pairs the verse with a word of hope — "stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near" (v.28) — so the Danielic coming is, for the disciples, deliverance rather than terror. The telos is the glorious appearing of the Son of Man as the redemption of His people: His cloud-coming is the moment the saints of the Most High receive the kingdom (Dan 7:18, 22), and so His return is to be awaited with lifted heads and longing hearts.
