Anchor Text: Mal 3:1 — Behold I Send My Messenger
Significance: John's declaration that "One more powerful than I will come" (Luke 3:16) places his own ministry in the preparatory role described in Malachi 3:1, where the messenger (malʾāk) prepares the way before the sudden advent of "the Lord" (hāʾādôn) to his temple. The structure of John's self-description — the one who baptizes with water contrasted with the mightier one who baptizes with Spirit and fire — maps onto Malachi's contrast between the preparatory messenger and the refining, purging Lord who follows. The composite citation in Mark 1:2-3 and Matthew 11:10 makes the Malachi connection explicit, but Luke's account implies it through John's language of subordination. The coming one described by John is divine — the LORD himself — arriving in the person of Jesus. This connection is central to Luke's high Christology embedded in the narrative of Jesus' public debut.
