Significance: Jesus explicitly cites Ps 82:6 with the formula "Is it not written in your Law" (en tō nomō hymōn gegraptai), applying it as a qal wahomer (lesser-to-greater) argument: if Scripture called human rulers and judges "gods" (elohim) because the word of God came to them, how much more can the one whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world claim divine identity without committing blasphemy? The argument depends on the Psalm's context: Ps 82 depicts God judging corrupt rulers who bear the title "gods" by virtue of their delegated divine authority, yet fail in their office and will "die like men." Jesus' logic is not that he is merely a delegated ruler like those judges, but that the lesser category of delegated divinity makes the claim of the greater — the Son who shares the Father's works (10:37-38) — all the more coherent. The quotation is a defensive counter to the accusation of blasphemy, not an assertion of mere human status.
