John 12:41 to Isaiah 6:1

NT Text: John 12:41

OT Source(s):

Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

Reference Type: Allusion

Connection Method(s): Typology + Redemptive-Historical Progression

Significance: Background = Isaiah 6 call narrative. Targum Jonathan changes "I saw the Lord" to "I saw the glory of the Lord" and "King" to "glory of the shekinah." Evangelist says Isaiah saw Jesus' glory (not Jesus himself directly). Isaiah foresaw God's pleasure in Suffering Servant who would be "lifted up" (52:13) yet "pierced" (53:5, 12). Like Abraham, Isaiah saw Jesus' "day" (cf. 8:58). Demonstrates Suffering Servant = Jesus.
