NT Text: John 15:25

OT Source(s):

  • Psalms 69:4 (Davidic lament: "Those who hate me without reason")
  • Psalms 35:19 (also Davidic: "who hate me without cause")
  • Psalms 109:3 (groundless hatred motif, different wording)

Anchor Text: Ps 69 — The Reproaches

Significance: Longest introductory formula in John (if not entire NT). Elliptical: "But [this happened] in order that the word might be fulfilled..." "Their law" ironically highlights Jews convicted by "their own law"; "law" = broadly "Scripture." Psalm 69 more likely source (widely regarded as messianic; evangelist previously cited 69:9 in 2:17; see also 19:28 possible allusion to 69:21). Parallelism between hate and persecution found in Psalm 68:5a-b LXX. Alternative: Psalm 35:19 (also Davidic prayer for deliverance from enemies "without cause"). Both psalms feature righteous sufferer zealous for God but persecuted by enemies. False charges highlighted (35:11, 21, 20; 69:4).
