NT Text: John 16:32
OT Source(s):
Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): Promise-Fulfillment + Typology
Significance: Probable allusion to Zechariah 13:7 (quoted by Jesus in Matthew 26:31/Mark 14:27; cf. Matthew 26:56b). Image of shepherdless sheep and scattering also in other OT passages. John's context: not disciples left without shepherd, but Jesus deserted by his sheep. As in 1 Kings 22:17, scattering linked with everyone "going to his own home" (eis ta idia; cf. John 19:27).
