Significance: Anticipates commissioning in 20:21. Just as Jesus "set apart" and sent, so disciples set apart to be sent. Jesus' relationship with Father = pattern for disciples' relationship to Jesus as sender (Köstenberger 1998b). Partial OT parallel: Moses consecrated by God (Sirach 45:4) in order to consecrate others as priests (Exodus 28:41). Jesus' self-sacrifice also reminiscent of OT "setting apart" sacrificial animals (Deuteronomy 15:19; Michaels).
