Significance: In the high-priestly prayer Jesus says, "For them I sanctify Myself, so that they too may be sanctified by the truth" (John 17:19), language that echoes the consecration of Aaron and his sons, whom Moses was to "anoint... ordain... and consecrate so that they may serve Me as priests" (Exod 28:41). Under the old covenant priests were set apart by others through rite and anointing to mediate on behalf of the people; Jesus, the true High Priest, set apart by the Father and sent into the world (John 17:18, drawing the same Exodus text), now consecrates Himself — He is at once the priest who sanctifies and, in His self-offering, the sacrifice that sanctifies. The connection is typological: the historical Aaronic consecration is the type, escalated in that Christ's setting-apart is voluntary, self-enacted, and effective to make His people truly holy, not merely ceremonially clean. The forward-pointing character of the priesthood — always mediating, never finishing — is fulfilled in the One whose single consecration sanctifies many. The telos is that believers are drawn into His holiness as a gift, set apart in the truth He embodies, that they might delight to share His access to the Father (Heb 10:10, 14).
