Anchor Text: Psalm 22 — My God My God Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me
Significance: Four Roman soldiers took Jesus' clothes (belt, sandals, head-covering, outer garment), divided into four shares. Outer garment seamless, woven from top to bottom—decide not to tear but cast lots. Evangelist asserts: "happened in order that the Scripture might be fulfilled" (19:24). OT references become more frequent as passion approaches (presumably because Jewish audience particularly skeptical about crucified Messiah; Carson; Witherington). OT reference clearly Psalm 22:18, Davidic passage regarding righteous sufferer. Synoptics quote Jesus reciting at least opening line (perhaps entire psalm) on cross (Matthew 27:46/Mark 15:34).
