Reference Type: Allusion

Connection Method(s): Promise-Fulfillment

Anchor Text: Ps 69 — The Reproaches

Significance: Reference in 19:28 to Scripture being fulfilled builds on 19:24, continues evangelist's emphasis on Jesus actively bringing about respective passion events. John 19:28-29 most likely represents allusion to Psalm 69:21: "They... gave me vinegar for my thirst" (cf. Matthew 27:34, 48; Psalm 69:21 also cited in 1QH XII, 11; Carson 1988). Allusion may involve entire psalm in portrayal of righteous sufferer (Ridderbos; Carson). Choice of teleiōthē rather than plērōthē seems function of presence of tetelestai immediately preceding (19:28) and following again (19:30).
