Anchor Text: Isa 52:13-53:12 — The Suffering Servant
Significance: John's account of Jesus' burial commences with Joseph of Arimathea, wealthy member of Sanhedrin (Matthew 27:57 pars.), asking Pilate for body of Jesus (19:38). Joseph's intervention fulfilled another Scripture: "He was assigned grave with wicked, and with rich in his death" (Isaiah 53:9) (see Witherington). Number of aromatic spices brought by Joseph and Nicodemus was considerable (19:39-40), which has precedent in King Asa's burial (2 Chronicles 16:14). Burials in gardens also recorded in OT (Manasseh [2 Kings 21:18]; Amon [2 Kings 21:26]). According to Nehemiah 3:16 LXX (cf. Acts 2:29), popular tomb of David was situated in garden as well.
