Significance: Jesus' declaration "unless you believe that I am He [egō eimi], you will die in your sins" (John 8:24) directly appropriates the divine self-identification formula 'ani hu ("I am He") from Deutero-Isaiah, where Yahweh uses it as his exclusive divine name and mark of incomparable identity (Isa 43:10, 13, 25; 45:18; 46:4; 48:12). In Isa 43:10, the formula appears in the context of Israel's calling to be witnesses that Yahweh alone is God and Savior: "so that you may know and believe Me and understand that I am He." Jesus transposes this exact structure — divine identity + testimony + salvation — onto his own person, requiring belief in his egō eimi identity as the condition for not dying in one's sins. The connection is reinforced in John 8:28 ("when you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He") and 8:58 ("Before Abraham was born, I am"), constituting a sustained egō eimi Christology rooted in the Isaianic Yahweh speeches.
