NT Text: Acts 7:5

Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): Promise-Fulfillment + Longitudinal Theme
Significance: Stephen notes that God "gave him no inheritance here, not even enough ground to set his foot on. But God promised him that he and his descendants after him would possess the land, even though at that time Abraham had no child." This alludes to Genesis 17:8 where God promises Abraham: "The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after me." Stephen does not quote verbatim but draws on the substance of the covenant promise. The connection operates through promise-fulfillment (God's land promise to Abraham, which was partially fulfilled in the conquest but awaits its ultimate fulfillment in the new creation) and the longitudinal theme of land and inheritance (the physical land promise traces a trajectory through the canon toward the eschatological inheritance, Heb 11:13-16).
