Romans 10:6-8 to Deuteronomy 30:12

NT Text: Romans 10:6

OT Source(s):

Source: Beale & Carson (eds.), Commentary on the New Testament Use of the Old Testament (2007); Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

Reference Type: Direct Quotation

Connection Method(s): Analogy + Contrast

Significance: Paul radically reinterprets Moses' words about the accessibility of the law to speak of the accessibility of Christ through faith. One of Paul's most creative uses of OT - the "near word" is now the gospel word about Christ.

Hermeneutical Notes

NT Use Pattern: Ironic / Inverted — Moses speaks the "word is near you" of the law; Paul applies the same phrasing to the word of faith. A striking inversion in which the same Deuteronomic phrasing about accessibility is transferred from law to gospel.

Anchor Text: Deut 30:12-14 — The Word Is Near You
