NT Text: Romans 15:9

Significance: David's thanksgiving for deliverance from enemies is spoken by the risen Christ among Gentiles. Christ confesses God's name to the nations, bringing them salvation. Paul omits "Lord" to clarify Christ is speaking TO God, not identified with God here (though identification occurs in 15:11). The thanksgiving psalms form a "sacrifice of praise" vocabulary complex underlying Paul's temple-building metaphor in Romans 15. The commentary notes that "the language of building suggests 'temple' imagery: the eschatological temple of the Lord is being constructed out of human beings, Jews and Gentiles, among whom God himself now dwells" (15:20). The apostle's "priestly service" (hierourgeō, 15:16) connects to the sacrificial-thanksgiving language of these psalms. Paul's use of "confession/praise" (exomologeō) in 15:9 echoes the thanksgiving sacrifice vocabulary, particularly as they relate to the Hiphil of yādâ ("give thanks/praise"). These psalms establish the cultic-worship framework for understanding the Gentiles' incorporation into the people of God as an act of eschatological temple building.

Hermeneutical Notes

NT Use Pattern: Assimilated — First element of Paul's four-text catena (Ps 18:49 / 2 Sam 22:50 + Deut 32:43 + Ps 117:1 + Isa 11:10) confirming Gentile praise of God.
