Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): Typology + Redemptive-Historical Progression
Significance: Paul alludes to the Genesis account of Adam's sin as the entry point of sin and death into the world — "sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin." This is the foundation of Paul's Adam-Christ typology developed in Romans 5:12-21. Adam functions as a type of Christ (v. 14): as Adam's one act of disobedience brought condemnation and death to all humanity through corporate solidarity, so Christ's one act of obedience brings justification and life. The typology operates by both correspondence (one man's act affecting all) and escalation (grace abounds far more than the trespass).
