Romans 9:33 to Isaiah 28:16

NT Text: Romans 9:33

OT Source(s):

  • Isaiah 28:16 ("Behold, I am laying in Zion... a cornerstone... whoever believes will not be in haste")
  • Isaiah 8:14 ("He will become... a stone of stumbling and rock of offense")

Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

Reference Type: Direct Quotation

Connection Method(s): Promise-Fulfillment + Typology

Significance: Paul combines two Isaiah texts about a stone in Zion - one positive (cornerstone of faith), one negative (stumbling stone). Christ is both: cornerstone for believers, stumbling stone for unbelievers. Brilliant conflation showing dual response to Christ.

Hermeneutical Notes

NT Use Pattern: Alternate Textual — Paul uses the LXX "whoever believes will not be put to shame" rather than the MT "whoever believes will not be in haste." The faith-and-shame logic of Romans 9-10 rides on the LXX reading.
