Significance: Paul alludes to Numbers 12:6-8 in 1 Corinthians 13:12 by drawing on the distinction between indirect and direct divine revelation. In Numbers, God distinguished Moses from other prophets: while prophets received visions and dreams (en ainigmati, "in riddles"), Moses spoke with God "face to face" (stoma kata stoma), beholding the form of the LORD. Paul inverts the contrast: in the present age, even believers with spiritual gifts see only dimly as in a mirror (di' esoptrou en ainigmati), but in the eschatological future, they will see "face to face" (prosōpon pros prosōpon). The key term ainigma ("riddle/enigma") appears in both texts, forming the verbal link. What Moses uniquely experienced — direct, unmediated communion with God — becomes the eschatological hope of all believers. This creates a typological escalation: Moses' face-to-face experience with God foreshadows the surpassing clarity of the beatific vision that all the redeemed will enjoy.
